The Hoodie Crow is a body of ceramic work inspired by the Scottish folktale of the same name. Through mythology, storytelling, and sculptural world-building, the series explores domesticity, fear, anger, life, death, and the extremes of love and devotion. Reimagining the ancient tale through contemporary ceramic forms, the work reflects on the lengths we are willing to go for those we love, and the transformations that love, loss, and sacrifice can demand.

Populated by whimsical hybrid figures—part human, part crow—the series inhabits a world where the mystical and the everyday coexist. Drawing on the visual language of folklore, these imagined characters embody emotional states rather than fixed identities, allowing the familiar themes of the folktale to resonate with contemporary experiences of relationships, care, and survival.

Working exclusively in ceramics, I use clay to create tactile, expressive forms that balance humour with unease. The handmade nature of the work embraces imperfection, echoing the oral tradition of folklore, where stories evolve and transform over time. Through The Hoodie Crow, I use myth not as an escape from reality, but as a means of examining the enduring complexities of love, fear, and what it means to care for another.
